Life Sciences
Life Sciences companies are amongst the strongest and most obvious claimants for R&D tax credits. However, many companies are growing so quickly that they have not yet had the time to make a maximised claim for the relief. While project grants are common in this sector, receipt of a grant does not disbar a company from claiming – it merely changes the mechanics of how a claim is made. Jumpstart’s team of chemists and biologists combine academic qualifications with the industry and business experience that is required to assist with your claim.
“I received a letter from Jumpstart in early November 2008 introducing the company and its services. This caught us at a good time, as our financial year was rapidly approaching and we didn’t have much spare time to divert to researching an application. Jumpstart prioritised our project and ensured that it was submitted before our deadline so that we didn’t lose out financially. Our claim was approved a month after submission, giving us quick access to a source of funding we hadn’t previously considered. As a Contract Research Organisation, we’ll be making further claims for R&D tax credits and see these as a valuable form of on-going support.”

A biotech company based in the West of Scotland Science Park, used Jumpstart after being approached by one of Jumpstart’s highly experienced Business Analysts who has a particularly strong track record in working with contract research organisations. The funding manager states:
“I am delighted with the service my company got from Jumpstart and very happy to give a testimonial. My main comment is that my company got a significant amount of cash that we wouldn’t otherwise have known about, were it not for Jumpstart. Had their Business Analysts not approached me and provided us with a 40 minute, free screening I know this scheme would never have been brought to our attention. There’s no doubt, Jumpstart offers a unique service that I know we couldn’t have got elsewhere. The Technical Analyst managing our claim was first rate. I knew the moment we met that he had a very thorough understanding of our field and the nature of our business. It made it so straightforward to explain what we did. Knowing that he was working on our claim allowing us to get on with the delivery of our work was really great. The whole thing took such a short time too; the Jumpstart team provided a very fast turnaround, they made everything very clear and there was obviously a lot of valuable know-how within the team in terms of cost capture process etc. The Technical Analysts patiently liaised with our accountants and the cash outcome was fantastic. I would highly recommend you speak to them.”

“I didn’t need to be convinced of our R&D situation and in fact we probably have a clearer view than most as to what constitutes R&D. What interested us was how far we could extend that; to learn what the R&D tax claim legislation would cover so a free 40 minute screening offer was a very quick way for us to find out more.
We had a very productive initial meeting with the Business Analyst from Jumpstart. Through a question and answer session we could see that there were already good indications of the sort of work that would be covered in a claim, and that gave us comfort. At the meeting with the Technical Analysts it was evident very quickly that he had an excellent knowledge of what we were doing and that in many ways we were preaching to the converted when it came to describing the technical challenges and uncertainties. The continuity of that has been evident throughout the process and we haven’t seen any hitches at any point.
I’m in no doubt that we could not have done what jumpstart achieved on our own. The substantial body of work that was written up in our technical report was excellent. I think we might have got some of the way but certainly nowhere near as far and we would not have got it right first time.
Apart from receiving money, the success of the process has been to encourage us to look even more closely at our business and what we do in terms of future planning of research. It is true that Jumpstart has maximised our claim and that our accountant has been helped to utilize it for our business benefit.
I would thoroughly recommend Jumpstart to others. Doing an R&D Tax claim perhaps sound like a bit of a climb up Mount Everest but Jumpstart made it very easy and dare I say enjoyable? Their whole approach at a scientific level meant that HMRC received a technical report that contained all the salient points; it’s a winning combination of legislative understanding and technical know-how. ”

“We received great service from Jumpstart and found the entire claim process painless. We engaged Jumpstart and they set about capturing the relevant information. That was done really well and it was great how the Technical Analyst led us through the process in our face-to-face meetings. Our initial concerns about the cost capture were totally unfounded as Jumpstart’s established process made it all very simple and easy. It’s not often you can say this, but I do not feel Jumpstart needs to work on improving anything because it was all very well done. I would highly recommend you give them a call. ”
