Look up at the sky tonight and, weather permitting, you should be able to see a slow-moving bright white dot. Described as the most expensive single item ever built, the International Space Station (ISS) has been orbiting the Earth for the last 20 years. And don’t be fooled by that apparently sedate pace; the ISS is actually hurtling along at more than 17,000 mph, enabling the crew to enjoy 16 sunrises and sunsets every day.

Occupied since November 2000, this flying research laboratory has played host to astronauts, cosmonauts and others from at least 17 different nations, including our own Tim Peake from December 2015 to June 2016. The crews conduct research into astronomy, biology, physics and other fields that couldn’t be done on Earth. And if you’re wondering whether R&D conducted 220 miles above our heads still qualifies for tax credits, the short answer is ‘yes’.

Like to take a closer look? Providing you can pass a medical exam and afford the $40 million return fare you too could join the growing band of space tourists to visit the ISS. Throw in a ticket for your partner and you might even join the 220 mile-high club as well.
